Our office in Toronto is seeking a Subway Ventilation Engineer to join our Toronto team.
The Subway Ventilation Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, and implementation of ventilation systems for underground transit environments. This role ensures compliance with safety standards and operational efficiency, leveraging advanced simulation tools and local design guidelines. This is a new role in our Toronto office with a hybrid work arrangement.
Key Responsibilities:
· System Design & Analysis
· Develop ventilation solutions for subway stations, tunnels, and emergency scenarios
· Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for airflow, smoke control, and thermal comfort
· Standards & Compliance
· Ensure all designs comply with Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Design Manuals, NFPA 130, and applicable codes
· Prepare technical documentation, specifications, and drawings.
· Project Coordination
· Lead ventilation design activities across project phases (concept, detailed design, construction support)
· Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, fire safety)
· Safety & Risk Management
· Conduct emergency ventilation and smoke management studies
· Validate system performance under worst-case conditions using CFD and empirical methods
Qualifications:
· Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
· Experience: Minimum 10 years in subway or tunnel ventilation design.
· Technical Expertise:
· Proficiency in CFD software (e.g., FDS, ANSYS Fluent).
· Strong knowledge of tunnel aerodynamics.
· Standards Knowledge: TTC Design Manuals, NFPA 130, ASHRAE guidelines.
· Soft Skills: Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience with Toronto transit projects or similar large-scale urban rail systems
· Familiarity with emergency ventilation strategies and fire life safety systems is mandatory
